When we experience a stressful thought or event, the body begins to produce hormones and neurotransmitters designed specifically to help us respond with the infamous “fight or flight” response. This is an old defense mechanism meant to help us engage conflict or flee it, which was once necessary for our survival. Now, however, our “fight or flight” response is largely the root of the debilitating effects of stress.
