I’d like to take a moment to share with you a powerful technology that we utilize at our center for conditions of high stress and anxiety. This technology is called Alpha Theta Neurofeedback.
We utilize this in comprehensive protocols with the use of a brain map, or as a standalone therapy. However, in this segment we are going to briefly discuss it as a standalone therapy without the use of a brain map.
So let’s start with a basic understanding of brain waves. There are basically four brain waves that we naturally move in and out of two times a day: when we wake up, and when we go to sleep. These brain waves are called Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta.
Now, when you are stuck in a stress or anxiety response where the circumstance or event is no longer happening, but you’re still in that state, that’s where it can have a devastating effect on the quality of your life. Not only is the body in a sympathetic fight or flight response, but more importantly, the brain is stuck in what we call High Beta. This is like driving on the highway in first gear. You WILL burn out the clutch.
Now in the case of an emergency, you may need to downshift to first or second gear to pass a vehicle or get out of the way of danger, but this is short term! The same goes for the brain. Unfortunately, chronic stress and anxiety causes the brain to get stuck in High Beta as a default pattern.
Alpha Theta Neurofeedback/Brain Training can literally break these vicious cycles. It does this by providing a two-way communication through wires with electrodes from the head connected to a computer. When the brain starts to move into High Beta, an inhibitory signal is sent from the computer to the brain, preventing the brain from going into Beta and shifting it into Alpha.
Alternatively, if the brain starts falling asleep by moving into Delta, this technology inhibits the brain from going into Delta and shifts it into Theta.
By continuing to train the brain into this Alpha Theta range, the brain begins to recalibrate it’s default set point from a High Beta stress state into a calm Alpha Theta brain wave state. Over time as the brain rewires into this new pattern, it solidifies the long-term benefit, as the saying goes, of “being calm within the storm,” because the brain LITERALLY changes!
This is not only an excellent therapy for chronic stress and anxiety but also for high-level athletes who want to take their sport to the next level. High level athletes know that the ability to stay calm and focused in the midst of clutch moments can be the difference between success and failure, between a gold medal and a silver.
If you would like to learn more about how we can help you or a loved one break out of these vicious cycles of stress and anxiety using Alpha Theta Neurofeedback, or if you’re a high-level athlete who wants to take your performance to the next level, call (619) 287-4005 to schedule a free consultation with one of our functional medicine specialists. We can answer any questions you have to find out if and how we can help you with a specific health concern or goal!
Are you experiencing high stress or anxiety? Are you looking for a drug-free alternative?Acupuncture is a powerful medical modality that we utilize effectively to reduce stress and anxiety in the body, and it’s being utilized more and more by the professional medical community.
Specifically, the modality called biomedical acupuncture successfully reduces stress and anxiety! But before we focus in on that, let’s take a step back and give you a brief premise of human physiology so that you have a strong foundation that will let you understand why and how biomedical is so effective.
The stress and anxiety that you may be experiencing is an expression of a “lifesaving system” called the sympathetic fight-or-flight response. This system is what will literally save your life when you’re under threat. Think of it this way: You’re walking off the curb and all of a sudden you see a car coming right at you. The fight-or-flight response senses danger and turns on immediately, increasing your heart rate and pumping blood flow into your legs so that you can jump out of the way of the oncoming car.
The fight-or-flight response can also give you superhuman strength. We’ve all heard the story of the child who gets stuck under a car and the mother lifts the car just enough to get that child out from underneath. You could bring that same mother into gym the next day and she can’t even budge one-tenth of the weight of that car. Why? Because there was no threat to her survival or to the child’s survival. So this is a powerful life-saving system.
Now, when this system goes beyond the circumstance, or goes beyond the situation and into chronic mode, this is where we develop the problems. This is because the flight-or-flight response gets habituated and goes into automatic pilot.
However, the body has an antidote to this fight-or-flight response. It’s the flip side of the system called parasympathetic rest and digest. This system uses one nerve to help override that stress response: the vagus nerve. Any time you’re in chronic stress or anxiety, your body is telling you that the vagus nerve is not engaged and therefore not working properly. It’s not turned on and the system is stuck in that stress pattern.
This is where biomedical acupuncture may have a profound effect on reducing stress and anxiety conditions. Why? Because this modality has a direct effect on this one nerve, and by stimulating the vagus nerve, we override that fight-or-flight response.
Now remember, these chronic stress and anxiety conditions are habituated vicious patterns AND are highly sensitive conditions. This means that they can be set off with the slightest triggers.
The sensitivity of these conditions are no different than that annoying car alarm that goes off when the wind blows, or if you happen to lightly brush up against the car while walking by. Highly sensitive!
So what we need to do, and what we generally see in our center, is that we have to go through a period of treatments to continue to interrupt and calm this pattern down.
If you continue to interrupt the pattern, it no longer results in chronic stress and anxiety, which is simply a neurological pattern that’s stuck in a vicious cycle. Our goal here at the center is to interrupt that pattern enough times so that the body has now gone back into balance or what we called homeostasis.
We also teach patients principles, strategies, and techniques to capture that state they experience from treatment and how to recreate it in their own lives. The outcome: they become more empowered, and get back in the front seat of their own health! That is our primary mission here at the Center for Integrative Care.

We often hear the question, “What is the list of conditions acupuncture treats?”
This is a hard question to answer, especially when you understand the mechanism of acupuncture. Essentially, this question is based on the pharmaceutical model, which is focused on the treatment of disease, signs, and symptoms – which acupuncture does not do!
You’re probably thinking, “Well that’s the reason why I would want acupuncture. I have pain, I have inflammation, I have digestiveproblems, I have allergies, I have insomnia“… The list goes on.
However, the key to understanding acupuncture is to recognize that any kind of breakdown in function leads to symptoms, signs, and disease. Acupuncture repairs the functional breakdown, stimulating and ultimately restoring function to the body. It stimulates and activates the body’s natural repair processes.
Any time there is a breakdown in function, you’re going to have a condition such as disease, signs, and symptoms. However, acupuncture focuses on the upstream effect of why you’re having what you’re having instead of simply treating the symptom like other medical modalities.

For years, we’ve had patients coming to our center and saying, “Why am I feeling like I am stuck in a pattern? I am stuck in a cycle, and I can’t get out of it.” These patients could be having stress, anxiety, depression, pain, or inflammation. Did you know that acupuncture is a time-tested strategy for breaking these patterns?
These vicious cycles are no different than a bad habit. Think about it. Have you ever had a bad habit that you wanted to break? The answer is probably, “YES!” Think about that time you said, “I am done with this. I’m going to break this habit,” and you take action to break the habit, and the habit starts to reduce.
Now, if you don’t jump right on that habit again, what do you think it will start doing? That’s right, it’s going to go back up again, perpetuating these vicious cycles of stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and inflammation.
The time-tested medical modality called acupuncture is what ancient medical practitioners created in China and have been used and evolved over 3,000 years to break these patterns. Biomedical acupuncture disrupts these vicious cycles by interrupting the neurological signal that is causing the patterns. Once we interrupt the signal, the signal will go down, thus reducing the pattern of unwanted thinking and behavior.
However, just like a bad habit, the signal will go back up again to recreate that old pattern of stress, anxiety, depression, pain, or inflammation if it remains untreated. So, we continue to interrupt the cycle over, over, and over, causing the pattern to lower and lower until we get to a point of resetting or rebooting the body’s self-repair system!
Here’s a question: Do you trust that your body has the natural ability to heal itself? Yes, of course it does! The only time it doesn’t heal is when there is something interfering with that self-repair process. Whenever you exceed demands beyond your ability to recover, the body goes in this self-protection mode, which means it becomes faulty. See, the body was never meant to take on chronic stress or chronic demands. It was built for short-term stress, so long-term chronic stress takes a big toll on the body.
When you exceed the body’s stress limits over a long period of time, the system becomes faulty and it goes into protection mode, creating its own demise. It’s like a smoke alarm that keeps beeping, but the fire happened a long time ago. So we need to continue to interrupt that pattern, so that it the body no longer responds with pain, inflammation, stress, anxiety, or depression. As we continue to reduce the signal strength of these vicious cycles, we see the body starts to recalibrate, reboot, and reset over a period of treatment time!
At this point, the patient starts to experience momentum in their health because the body really wants to stay in balance, what we call homeostasis. The patient is then able to take control of their health and own it!
That is how we help support patients here at The Center for Integrative Care.

Welcome to the Center for Integrative Care. We are a functional medicine and peak performance center in San Diego, CA where we specialize in providing science-based, natural medical modalities for health care problems and for those who want to achieve optimal levels of health. We primarily provide alternatives to surgery and medication.
We utilize a host of different medical modalities with that purpose in mind. This includes bio-medically-based acupuncture, dietary, herbal, and nutritional therapy based on blood tests, hormone panels and other diagnostic tests your medical doctor would prescribe pharmaceuticals, and more.
Now I need to point out that just because something is natural does not mean it’s safe. This is especially true when there are drug, herb, and drug-nutrient interactions. Here at the Center we are highly trained in understanding those interactions, and we work hand-in-hand with the medical community to provide a safe integration of treatments.
We also utilize QEEG Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback, or “brain training.” This technology literally has the ability to stimulate and rewire your brain for optimal performance for issues such as ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety, memory loss, traumatic brain injuries, and many other brain-related conditions.
We also provide a specialized therapy for chronic pain and dysfunction, called ARPwave Therapy. This therapy accelerates recovery in a fraction of the time.
Along with our main modalities, we also integrate restorative exercises when necessary such as Tai Chi, Chi Kong, meditation, core body mechanics, and other body-mind exercises to strengthen and support both your body and your mind for optimal health.
Lastly, and most importantly, we believe that an educated patientis an empowered patient. Therefore, we place the highest emphasis on patient education in the areas of diet, lifestyle, exercise, and peak performance for life.
Our mission here at the Center for Integrative Care is to arm our patients with the best integrative understanding of their body and mind to live life to the fullest and be examples in the community for what is possible.
